When two architects bought a rundown flat in Western, they had two problems: a tiny space and a limited budget. "We didn't want to spend too much money but we wanted to make the most of what little space we had," explained the owners. Walls were kept white to keep the flat bright during the day. Furnishings include simple, flexible pieces that can be moved around: a compact sofa, folding chairs and a slim table that is pulled into the middle of the space when guests arrive. Another clever storage idea includes floor-to-ceiling plywood units which house a shoe storage system and a bed mounted on a raised platform. Treasured art works, a feeling for textures and an eye for neutral tones define this soothing interior in the heart of Central. The decor blends perfectly, yet rises above the coolly minimal with its white walls, dark and light woods, marble and comfy pale sofa. Paintings, including works by artist Lee Man Sang, hang on the right-hand wall of the living area, helping to focus the eye along the length of the room. This apartment blends classic designs (four Eames chairs) with innovative ideas (a D-I-Y low slung table) and use of modern materials (a low-level MDF shelving unit on coasters). The MDF unit houses the television and provides storage and display for the owner's collections. A FEW MORE USEFUL IDEAS ... In a low-ceilinged room, large-scale furniture should be low and lean. All you need in a bedroom is a bed, a side lamp, a floor lamp and a piece of art. Blinds and panels take up less room than traditional closet doors. Mount a dish drainage unit over the sink rather than on the counter. Buy stackable or foldaway chairs and a table; these can be set up in the living area when guests drop by.
