There are many different types of lighting to choose from in the market, and each should serve a particular function.
In entrance areas or along corridors, where people do not stay for long periods, the most effective type of lighting would be ceiling mounted downlights, as these provide efficient bright light. Because these are essentially the transit zones of a home, the fact that they give out some glare does not matter.
The sitting room is where people would relax and spend long periods of time. It is therefore essential that lights are not directly aimed at places where people are likely to sit. Instead it should be focused on interesting objects around the room such as being directed towards pictures on the wall or plants. Also, provide a degree of flexibility by using lights that can be moved around the space or that can be adjustable. This means that the lighting can adapt to changing functions in the room from reading, watching television to having a party.
In any case we strongly advise against any type of lighting where the bulb is easily visible as this will cause discomfort to the eyes.
Dining room lighting is probably the easiest to tackle because generally, the only thing people do here is to eat. Most of the light in this room should be focused on the dining table. Pendant (ie: hanging) fittings with a shade are the best here because it can bring the light source near the table surface thus making it efficient and also avoids the glare of a visible light source at the ceiling level. |
