Tips for choosing a Range Hood (2)
Easy to Clean
The fan blades should be kept clean to maintain efficiency. The blades of a standard Range Hood do not normally trap oil or grease, but dust. Hence, to make cleaning easier, it is better to choose a Range Hood with detachable blades.
Country of Origin
Owing to different dietary patterns, Range Hoods from Japan and Europe are not very suitable for Hong Kong homes. This should be remembered when choosing a Range Hood.
Wind Curtain Style
The flow direction of a wind gate or curtain is different from that of the Range Hood itself, in fact the two could flow in opposite directions causing air flow disturbance. Therefore, Range Hoods offering wind curtains/gates as additional or essential features are in fact offering nothing substantial.
Exhausting in 3 Directions
Regular Range Hoods exhaust air via the top but this is a problem for kitchens with wall cabinets or pillars too close to the duct. In this case, a Range Hood which exhausts air from the side(s) would serve the purpose. Some Range Hoods, with 3 way exhaustion features, open a hole at the side of the body, but this is not functional. The exhaust pipe of a high quality 3 way exhaustion Range Hood usually connects with the exhaust vent on the top and exhausts the smoke either way.
Usage and Maintenance
Before cooking commences, the Range Hood should be turned on. Otherwise, the heat for cooking could cause damage to the machine. Do not turn the Range Hood off the moment cooking is done. Keep it on for around 15 minutes. Tiny grease particles still float about in the air for some time.
